Star Wars Versus Star Trek
This fan-trailer might be too epic for its own good.
I know there’s a line between being critical and being unfair, but while I was watching the video I kept wondering to myself what story was being told. At the same time it made me think about the possibilities an actual crossover-versus franchise might have.
Consider for a moment what we’re watching.
Star Wars, a beloved franchise with a fairly linear, self-contained story (however spanning across numerous media), and Star Trek, a beloved franchise rife with alternate histories and multiple dimensions spanning centuries.
I don’t doubt that you could do something like the Marvel/Avengers multi-film crossover universe thingy but you know as well as I do, that no studio has the wherewithal to make any kind of lasting decision or change to either.
For all the potential awesome contained therein, it’d be one massive tease.
You can also enjoy this video for all the fun.
There was a Star Trek book where the Next Gen Enterprise landed on X-Men world. I saw it on a Barnes & Noble shelf once and opened it to a cringe-worthy passage about Doctor Crusher getting all flustered by Wolverine’s ruggedness.
I’m getting secondhand cringe. >_<
That would be a great name for a used bookstore that specialized in awful/cheesy books.
Looks like it might be available. Google turns up hits for “Secondhand Embarrassment” but not “Secondhand Cringe.” ;)
I would probably stock it entirely with stuff that had been featured on Good Show, Sir! (which I’m sad STILL seems to be down due to server issues).
Speaking of used books, have you seen the NYTimes article that’s been about Andrew Offutt? It popped up on my G+, probably a link from Jeffro. It’s an interesting read.

Wow, there’s a salacious article title. I’ll give it a look.
Kind of disturbing. I don’t think I’d be up for that sort of task, much less be able to write about it later. The sci-fi fantasy genre is (or was) intricately entwined with print pornography. My girlfriend would probably never let me read genre fiction again if she had any idea how many famous and respectable authors were published in Playboy.
Also, I feel like modern social networking and publishing methods make the sort of anonymity that pulp fiction writers enjoyed that allowed them to delve into smuttier subjects a thing of the distant past. As we’ve become more of a shame-based culture, there’s probably a greater chance that people would try to out anyone who had erotic old-shame works in their skeleton closet.
I have to wonder though, with public figures like Zak S if there might be a vague sort of counter culture “acceptance” of working-types. In our lifetimes I think, there’s been a demystification of the porn industry.
There was for me, anyway. The mother of one of my high school friends developed a website for a porn company. Never saw it though — kind of funny that I was never that interested.
I wonder if she’d be offended if I asked her about it now? lol
