Have I mentioned the Rumors of War Relaunch Project FUNDED?
See for yourself!

The new comic has started!

I’m a fan of Egoraptor’s short-lived — I certainly never found more than three episodes — video series, “Sequelitis.” I don’t know if he ran out of things to say, maybe another project demanded his attention, or why he decided to stop — these three episodes alone are brilliant and I really wish there were more.

Uh… content warning — Egoraptor swears a lot.

“Castlevania 1 vs. Castlevania 2”

In the first video, Egoraptor describes the differences between Castlevania and Castlevania 2. Simple enough to start, but there’s a lot of depth to the discussion he brings — I can’t speak from having played either of the games, but I can follow what he says and even if I disagree I understand his preferences.

Mega Man Classic vs. Mega Man X

In his second video, Egoraptor talks about the effectiveness with which Megaman teaches its players how to play the game through gameplay, rather than tutorials. This takes a turn for the awesome when he reviews the gameplay of Megaman X. If you follow Extra Credits, this is an example of “learning through gameplay.”

In the third and final video, Egoraptor discusses how changes to the game made Castlevania 4 easier and more fun to play, but that decisions to include legacy mechanics weakened the game overall. It’s a fun game, with sloppy design.

I recommend that game designers look for design tips and inspiration across all media — board and card games, roleplaying games, and every single genre and sub-genre of video games, from Hidden Object to FPS, Casual, RTS, Fighting, Racing, Action, Platforming, yeah… everything. There are lots of games to draw from.
