I decided to run an experiment yesterday to see how long it would take me to get through a game of Arkham Horror by myself with five investigators, recording every action in my notebook, and including the following expansions: The Dunwich Horror, The Innsmouth Horror, The King in Yellow, The Black Goat of the Woods, and The Curse of the Dark Pharaoh.

It took about ten hours to play through thirteen turns, for which I’d pre-drawn and reviewed Mythos Cards (as well as the Ancient One, which was Cthugha). Everything was still random, but I took the time to read the Mythos Cards ahead of time so I could make sure I had everything I needed to play before I started in. (No sense locating the Act Deck if The Next Act Doesn’t Begin…)

By happy accident, the characters managed to keep the number of open gates below eight (5 investigators, counted as 4 due to the 2 extra boards, +1 maximum open gate before the Ancient One awakens because Dunwich and Innsmouth are being used together … *phew* means they could have 8 gates open before the final battle began) and actually managed to seal four, despite lots of terrible dice rolls.

One guy in the group (the Handyman) had the mission Join the Winning Team and was actively working against them, collecting the largest bundles of clue tokens where he could and trying in vain to get allies when he could find them. Funny thing, I realized it’s possible to work with the group while trying to complete the mission, ’cause you have to get allies somehow, and the more straightforward way is by collecting monster and gate trophies… by slaying monsters and closing gates.
