In the interest of keeping this entry relatively short (and making sure any roleplaying doesn’t get stuck behind a ‘more’ tag), I’m only placing the immediate lead-up to our next fight (which my character even lampshades to a degree) with the details of my character’s combat tactics behind a ‘more’ tag.

This was another encounter that struck me as particularly frustrating because we weren’t given an indication beforehand that the bandit (even an orc) would simply attack us. Our game master wasn’t the most inspired individual, but what I actually quote of the conversation is maybe one-tenth its content.

There were like, ten words exchanged between us. Most were mine.

Quoted from Game Master
Waiting in a safe distance for someone to return, you hide yourself a little ways off.

Elric steps out into the open and hails the orc.

Brother Darme, to the stranger
Excuse me! My name is Elric Darme! How are you this evening? Do you mind if I speak to you for a moment?

Elric prepares a Hold Person spell if the orc draws a weapon or responds with hostility.

Quoted from Game Master
“Attack!”

Brother Darme, to the stranger
I only said I wanted to talk to you! How … typical!

Initiative
1d20+5
20+5 = 25 (natural 20!!!)

Round 1
cast Hold Person (standard)
1d20+6
7+6 = 13 vs. Will

+Draw heavy mace (move)

Round 2
Hold Person (maintain; free)
5+6 = 11 vs. Will

Assuming that hold person either failed to begin with, or failed to hold him, try to move into a flanking position with Elena and attack.

Heavy mace attack
1d20+6
17+6 = 23 (add +2 if flanking)

Heavy mace damage
1d8+3
8+3 = 11

Round 3
If he has some kind of accomplice or backup, I’ll back off and use Sound Burst (1d20+6 vs Fort; 1d8 sonic; and stun on success). If he starts to rage, I’ll use Calm Emotions (1d20+5 vs Will).

Otherwise, if he lands a damaging critical hit on either of us at any point from about round 3 onward, I’ll put a Cure Moderate Wounds on it (2d8+4). Otherwise … if it looks good, keep attacking and make sure he doesn’t get away!

Heavy mace attack
1d20+6
11+6 = 17 (add +2 if flanking)

Heavy mace damage
1d8+3
7+3 = 10

Round 4
Follow the same basic routine as above. Same tactics as though against rage, reinforcements, or critical hits or highly-damaging attacks. Try to keep the flank going.

If Elena’s been hit for more than half her hit points (I don’t actually know what that is, but I’m guessing if she takes more than about 20 damage) I’ll use a Cure Moderate Wounds on her (2d8+4).

Heavy mace attack
1d20+6
1+6 = 7 (natural 1; automatic miss)

Round 5
Same routine as Round 3-4, if he’s still going.

Heavy mace attack
1d20+6
8+6 = 14 (add +2 if flanking)

Heavy mace damage
1d8+3
7+3 = 10
