I’ve been listening to the Season One episodes of Extra Credits while at work, and on a whim, I decided to look up one of the game designers mentioned in the show about sensitive topics are handled in games. Her name is Brenda Brathwaite, and this is me saying to you, that if you’re interested in getting into the game industry for the art or the message, to check out what she has to say.

I found a video of a panel she held at a conference. She talked about her background, game design, and her current projects. She discussed one game she designed to teach her daughter about the Middle Passage, to complement — or lend weight to — the lessons she received in school. I appreciate a lot of what she has to say about what games can teach us in that video.

If you’re interested in how games can be used to teach, to explore, and to learn, I recommend you check out what this woman has to say. It opened my eyes to some really interesting ideas. She also has a blog (http://bbrathwaite.wordpress.com/), and recognized that I’ve seen it referenced before by other game design blogs … which lends credence to what she has to say.
