I mentioned last night the idea of building a Magic deck themed around Rumors of War, and I think I have what I’d call a “rough draft.” It was an interesting experience, I tried some things with deck construction that I’ve never done before, partly because I wanted to make something that would be different from the “normal” sorts of decks I build — which are generally based on either older rules concepts or a singular new rule I want to try out.

To start, I sorted through all of my blue, white, and black cards, and pulled out all of my uncommons and rares, insofar as they are labeled from … whichever expansion they started color-coding them with silver and gold … onward. I have several thousand cards now, so it took quite a bit of time, but I got some interesting ideas for other decks while sorting, which is one of the reasons I enjoy it as an exercise anyway.

It’s like a kind of meditation. :P

I eventually picked out a number of cards from more recent expansions to fill the main concept of the deck. There’s some Shadowmoor, some Alara and Eventide, but mostly Scars of Mirrodin and Mirrodin Besieged. There are a bunch of cards based on manipulating -1/-1 counters, particularly with a control or disease theme. And there are some creatures with the Infect ability. I’m quite fond of them.

Here’s a partial decklist:

x3 Suture Spirit
x2 Choking Fumes
x2 Return to Dust

x3 Razorfin Abolisher
x3 Vedalken Anatomist
x3 Corrupted Conscience
x1 Distant Memories

x3 Nested Ghoul
x3 Septic Rats
x2 Skinrender
x2 Blowfly Infestation
x2 Greed
x1 Moonlight Bargain

x3 Unmake
etc.

The basic strategy is “take what you like, tap or destroy what you don’t,” with a focus on manipulating or destroying creatures.
